I have no idea if i can learn to fly this thing. But it's worth a shot, right?
It's the new distraction. A new hobby, something to do outside of my video work.
I've been looking for something new to get into. Something i can have a little fun with and RC Helicopters look like tons of fun!
It started during a trip to TJ Max with my wife a few weeks ago. I saw a Hawkspy 717 there that was on sale. The Hawkspy has a built in video camera and it looked like a great way to get some cool video. But I found i was more intrigued with the copter than its ability to shoot video.
I began to do some research and found several negative reviews on the Hawkspy. It's mostly a gimmick to sell the copter, with the camera. However at this point i was hooked. Reading all about RC copters and flying them was interesting and I began to look at other copters. Even a YouTube tutorial on how to fly them. The more i learned the more i felt I could fly one and the more fascinated I became.
As with any purchase I began to learn and study the idea before i committed to buy one and try it. There are tons of brands and models out there and some are not good for a beginner. I learned a coaxial is best to learn with and everyone has an opinion on which copter is the best learner.
But after hours of reviewing videos and reading up on them I decided to buy the Syma S033G. It's big and i didn't want a micro copter.
I want something I can fly outside! The S033g is about 30 inches long and will fly in calm or no wind.
I grabbed a little micro copter at Walgreens that was on clearance during the holidays. It flies but is hard to control. For $15 it was a good way to get the basic idea of how RC Helicopters work though. After Christmas we traveled to San Antonio Texas on vacation and while there i visited a few Hobby shops. No one had the chopper i wanted but I did get some good advice and instruction from them. I even grabbed some training 'wheels' for my Syma.
Then while walking in a mall I ran across a vendor that had the Syma S033G and several other heli's in a cluster for sale. He wanted way too much for the Syma and i knew i could get it online much cheaper so i decided not to buy it and continue to explore my options. That night i noticed XHeli.com had put the S033G on sale for an after Christmas blitz. I went ahead and bought it while the price was very low.
It will arrive later this week and I will begin my pilot training. Slow baby steps to learning to fly a RC Helicopter. The S033g will fly right out of the box but i plan to take it slow and easy until I get the hang of it. I'm sure i will crash it at some point but following the tutorials should help me get doing.
It's a new adventure, and something new for 2012. ;)
