Rocket City Diner

Years ago in Hattiesburg there was a great little diner called, Rocket City Diner. It was a restaurant with a 50's theme and great burgers. Recently the family owned eatery reopened and is back with all the style and fun of the original!

The diner opened a few weeks ago but Edith wanted to wait until her birthday to check it out so at the end of September I took her to Rocket City. I have to say this place does indeed ROCK!

It appears to cater mostly to a young crowd. I'm talking very young, but there were plenty of adults around as well. Parents and just people checking out the place like we were. So, just because you may think it's a kids haven, it really is a family restaurant with food for everyone, even beer.

Playing on the 1950's theme you will find soda jerks behind the counters and sock hop waitresses all around to make your visit pleasant. I looked for anyone named Marge but couldn't find one. Nor did I find a Maggie or Betty. But all the girls were really into it and you could tell they truly enjoyed playing to the crowd and dancing to the oldies.

The decor really takes you back with photos of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe all around. It's checker board floors invite you to try your hand with a hula-hoop or dance to the nostalgic music, Chuck Berry would be proud.

I've been to a few 'theme' restaurants and usually they are more theme than substance. The show being more important than the service and the food. However, you won't find that attitude at Rocket City Diner. The food is every bit as good as the atmosphere and you can order several different dishes. We tried the meatloaf and it was terrific!

Of course Edith's Birthday would not be complete without the sock hops singing to her. Naturally I had to embarrass her with the staff coming to the table to wish her a Happy Birthday. They modified a version of "Rock Around The Clock" which made for a fine celebration rendition.

Kookie lend me your comb cuz the old Rocket City Diner is back and in full swing, pardon the pun. It's a great place to take the whole family or just drop in for a quick lunch. No Rap, No heavy metal, just good fun and fine food.
